Brunch with Boylan - January 30, 2010
Runners' Club Founder, Mike Boylan will be having a Cincinnati Open House this coming Saturday January 30 at Findlay Market. Mike founded the Clifton Track and Road Racing Club in 1976 which became the Runners' Club of Greater Cincinnati in the mid 1990's.(Click here if you want all the gory details about the club's founding.)
He has rented a space in an open storefront on the south side of the market from 11am to 3 pm next to the former Mr. Pig location. Parking is available in the Findlay Market parking lots for a nominal fee. Anyone who would like to catch up or to meet him is invited to attend. Though he's moved to Columbus, he keeps contact with his many friends and acquaintances in Cincinnati, and wants to keep it that way.
Details: You bring the brunchie munchies, and he provides the beverages. Some form of entertainment and jocular commentary will start around 1 PM. He hopes to see many of his friends, old and new, this Saturday.

Cycle/Run/Walk Across America
Berkeley Lab has designed a transcontinental virtual trip across the United States. Each time you enter your mileage of either running, walking or cycling, they add it to your total and show you exactly what you would see if you had been traveling on the TransAmerica Trail from Yorktown, Virginia to Florence, Oregon. They also provide maps that show your progress and the progress of your friends if they have an account. If you wish, you can form teams to race across the United States. You can check it out at http://exercise.lbl.gov/index.html.

30th Annual Valentine's 2 Mile Labor of Love
Join the Runners' Club of Greater Cincinnati this winter in one of the most fun and unusual races you'll find in Cincinnati. In 2009 we made it more unusual by adding a couple of new specialty categories like Ball & Chain(a male and female runner are tethered together so they run together) and Blind Date(you randomly get a partner). In 2010, we bring back the Costume division (need to run the race in costume) plus a few other new ones. The race is put on by the Runners' Club of Greater Cincinnati and proceeds go to support running in the Greater Cincinnati area and the NKU Cross Country and Track team.

2010 Al Salvato Memorial Frostbite 5 Mile Recap
The Al Salvato Frostibite 5 Mile is held on January 1.  It was named after Al Salvato, an avid runner and supporter of both running and the YMCA.  Al founded the race to raise money for the Campbell County YMCA and was the race director for several years before passing away in 2006 due to complications from Leukemia. It is almost the last 5 mile road race in Greater Cincinnati outside of a few trail races.

The race returned to a later time of 10:30AM but it seemed colder this year.  There were about 240 others who decided to do this year even though it was much colder than 2009. In addition, the local newspaper  was there to cover it.

For a 5 mile race, I thought that registration was reasonably priced. Included in registration was the t-shirt.  It was short sleeve shirt and they did not have my size so I took the largest size that they had. I tend to like races more when purchasing a t-shirt was optional instead of including it in the price.   Since I have so many t-shirts, I wonder when I will wear them all.

The course was the same as the year before.  It seemed like I had personal battle with traffic in the last 2 miles of the course. Once again I had an equipment malfunction(both my shoes came untied in the first mile and I had to stop to tie them before I fell). Post Race featured bananas, and water. For some reason something hot like soup would have been nice probably due to the cold. Since the race venue was the Campbell County YMCA, you could shower after the race if you brought clothes and they did have lockers for your use as well to store your stuff, both underrated and underappreciated features.    2010 Frostbite 5 Mile Results.
