2013 Heart Mini Recap

One of Cincinnati's oldest and largest races is the Heart Mini-Marathon. It began in 1978 with about 3000 runners and now it approaches almost 15000 runners and walkers for the various events from the Half Marathon to the original 15k to the 5k and the 5k and 10k HeartWalks. For 2013, they eliminated Torrence and changed the start and finish line from 5th and Main to 6th and Broadway for the start and 5th and Broadway for the finish. I did not run any race due to the fact that I got injured at another race two weeks before so I would be spectating and keep watch on the club rooms at the Westin(Each year the club gets two rooms at the Westin to allow club members a place to put their stuff, avoid the portolets with 6,000 other runners and walkers, scramble to find a restroom with runners , and a chance to socialize with other members and guests). It was quite entertaining watching the runners trying to find a restroom open on the Westin before the race began. I know that is sick, but if they were members of the RCGC, that would not be a problem.
Conditions for this year's Half and 15k were not as good as 2012, but not as bad as 2009. It was a little cold and overcast but there was no wind. For the 5k at 10:30 conditions were much worse with the wind and snow falling. I was at the finish for the 15k and to eliminate the distance they added the hill at Sentinel. I don't know if that was any better than the hill at Torrence. In years past, you had the downhill to propel you to the finish. I headed back up to the rooms to hear what our members had to say about this year's race. I briefly checked out the postrace, which seemed pretty good except for maybe waiting in line for the goetta sandwiches. I got back up to the Runners' Club room to enjoy good company, good food and good drink(View Photos). One of the things that all the runners mentioned was the start and the swaying of the bridge to Columbia Parkway. Some runners felt dizzy and others were freaked out by it. Many members had such a good time at the Heart Mini Suite that the club might move the Holiday in Lights Run here for 2013.
A big Thank you to the Westin Hotel in downtown Cincinnati for being gracious hosts to the Runners' Club of Greater Cincinnati, Gina Meyers for the food, and Todd Hofacre for the drink and club members for cleaning up after themselves. See you in 2014.

Heart Mini Weekend - Club Style

Here is what the Runners' Club of Greater Cincinnati has going on for the Heart Mini Marathon this weekend:
  • For those that joined The Runners' Club of Greater Cincinnati Heart Mini Team, you can pick up your stuff at the Heart Mini Expo this Saturday March 16. The expo opens at 10:30 AM. In years past, they had a pick-up for groups.  If they have a pick up for groups, go there, tell them your name and team(Runners' Club of Greater Cincinnati) and there should not be a problem.
  • The club needs two people to help with the fluid station waterstop for the Heart MiniMarathon.  The bad news is that you need to be at the location by 7:00 AM.  The good news is you can come by and enjoy the RCGC Heart Mini-Suite after you are done. If you want to stay in one of the rooms on Saturday night, let us know.  It is our way of saying thank you for helping us out on this. If you can help, contact us and we can give you further details.
  • Every year, the Runners' Club of Greater Cincinnati gets a couple of rooms in the Westin to serve as hospitality suite for members and runners. We provide food, drinks, showers, a place to stash your gear, and a fantastic view of Fountain Square - where all the action is on race day! Rooms will be available around 7:00 AM on raceday. We generally find out the rooms late Saturday afternoon at check-in so check your email for the room number Saturday evening or contact us at cincinnatirunning@gmail.com.
Note:Only current paid RCGC members, and nonmembers who signed up for the Runners' Club Heart Mini-Team have access to the rooms.

2013 RCGC Flying Pig Updates

Here are a few updates about the club's involvement in the Flying Pig Marathon. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact us.
  • Flying Pig Discount  - The Runners' Club of Greater Cincinnati is a partner charity with the Flying Pig Marathon for 2013. As a partner charity, we get a lower registration rate for the Flying Pig Weekend events until April 19, 2013. Registration can be accessed through the Flying Pig Marathon website, www.flyingpigmarathon.com. Enter the coupon code at the Payment step of the registration process and the discount will be applied at Checkout. You will NOT be able to use the Discount Code during late registration at the Expo. The code is good for any of the events on Flying Pig Weekend from the 5k to the Full Marathon.
Register at www.flyingpigmarathon.com. When you register, enter the Discount Code where it says to enter the discount code on the registration page.
Note:PLEASE DO NOT GIVE THIS CODE TO FRIENDS OR FAMILY WHO ARE NOT MEMBERS OF THE CLUB OTHERWISE THE FLYING PIG WILL NOT ALLOW US DISCOUNTS FOR FUTURE FLYING PIG EVENTS! Also, the discount is not valid with other discounts that you may have already received. If you need the discount code, contact us at cincinnatirunning@gmail.com. Please consider raising funds for our organization.  If you raise $75 for the Runners' Club of Greater Cincinnati, the club will give you a free membership for 5 years and for $150 - 5 years free membership plus we will reimburse your 2013 Flying Pig Entry.   Note: You need to be a current member of the Runners' Club of Greater Cincinnati to use! You can join online at www.cincinnatirunning.com.
  • Club Fluid Station - The Club has a Flying Pig Fluid Station at mile 22. This is one of our largest volunteer opportunities of the year. We need 40 volunteers; so please volunteer today. Volunteers receive a free t-shirt courtesy of the pig, free food and drink at the waterstop, the chance to socialize with other members in a relaxed informal setting, and the free entertainment value of watching the Mile 22 Fluid Station Captain freak out over what could happen in 2013. The 2008 waterstop dealt with fire, 2009 dealt with no uplifting music(Social Distortion is the last thing you want to hear at mile 22) until the marathon unexpectedly came through with the DJ, 2010 dealt with rain and flooding, 2011 dealt with being struck by lightning, see what 2013 brings.   If you're running the full marathon, ask family, friends and coworkers to catch you at "Your water stop - Mile 22" or if you enjoy to watch people suffer, mile 22 is definitely the place to be. You can sign up to volunteer at our website.
For 2013 we are looking for a theme! In 2012 it was: What High School Did You Go To? If you have an idea contact us at cincinnatirunning@gmail.com.
  • Club Booth at the Flying Pig Expo - The club is currently procuring a booth at the 2013 Flying Pig Expo which is on Friday May 3, and Saturday May 4. The booth is located in the center of the action. Working the booth is quite easy. You just tell people what a great group we are, hand out club newsletters, promote the Memorial Day Race, and answer any other questions that they may have about the club. We need at least 2 volunteers at all times to man it. If you can work the booth at the Flying Pig expo, sign up using the online volunteer form.
  • Piggest Raffle Ever -  The Runners' Club of Greater Cincinnati is also part of the Piggest Raffle ever with the Flying Pig Marathon for 2013.  Adopt a pig for $5 for a chance to to win a 2013 Toyota Prius, select Runners' Club of Greater Cincinnati as charity and the club gets a portion of the proceeds.  For more information, view The Piggest Raffle Page at the the Flying Pig Marathon website, www.flyingpigmarathon.com.

Bockfest 5k Recap

Bockfest is a unique annual 3 day community event in Cincinnati celebrating Over-the-Rhine, beer and the coming of spring. 2013 marked the 21st Bockfest and for 2013, they added a 5k race called the Bockfest 5k. The Bockfest 5k is the first of three races in the Christian Moerlein Beer Series which celebrate Cincinnati's rich history of beer and running. Proceeds from the Bockfest 5k go to the Over-the-Rhine Brewery District, the main organizers of Bockfest.
I was planned to do another race this weekend and did not want to run back to back races so I volunteered to help at this race through the Flying Pig Marathon. For volunteering, I got two free drink tickets plus a long sleeve t-shirt. Since the temperatures were cold, a couple of runners wish that the race had given out long sleeve t-shirts like the one that I had versus the short sleeve shirt that they were given.
I was assigned to help with the start and finish line. Start and finish were on McMicken Street near the main Bockfest Hall on Moore Street in Over-the-Rhine. Before the race, I worked with quite a few others to set up the unique bockfest medals each runner received for the race. We took them out of the boxes, removed the packaging that they came in and put them on the table. We had incentive to finish quickly because did I mention how cold it was outside and seemed to get colder as we set up the medals. After we were finished, I went back into Bockfest Hall to warm up and observe race day registration. Race Day Registration was unique in that you could use a credit card to sign up on computer. They also had paper forms that you could fill out as well and pay by cash or check. I don't know how well that worked. About 15 minutes before the race started, I headed back out to the finish line and was assigned to hand out water to the finishing runners. It was still cold and it started to snow lightly. They had about 1100 runners run in this race. The course took you through much of Over-the-Rhine and part of downtown Cincinnati based on the course map. The top male was Erik Finan who ran a blistering 14:53 and the second place runner was about 10 seconds behind him. The top female was Kayla Camp-Warner who ran a 20:16. After runners finished, they got a medal, a mylar blanket, and a bottle of water. Inside Bockfest Hall, runners could enjoy bagels from Brueggers, bananas and Bock Beer if they were old enough. Also, there were a few other vendors where they could buy food if they wanted something else. For an Inaugural Race, it was well organized, most runners seemed to enjoy it except for the shirt and it brought more people down to Bockfest. If it is run in 2014, I might do it as a runner instead of a volunteer. Race Results.
