New Book on Runnning
Ray Charbonneau wrote a book called "Chasing the Runner's High". The book is the story of how Ray pushed his passion for running up to, and then past, his limits. He shares what he learned, what he should have learned, and what he still has to learn from running. It makes a great gift for that person who stares back at you from the mirror after your shower, for your running friends, or for friends who want to understand more about why anyone spends all that time running :-)
Marshall Ulrich, 4 time winner of the Badwater Ultramarathon, says the book "provides a hard look into the mind of a runner, offering advice that can only be had with experience and hard fought miles underfoot." Adena Schulzberg, winner of the 2006 Arkansas Marathon, writes, "these are brutally honest tales, told with candor and frankness about strength, courage, obsession, desire and hard won understanding of self and sport."
"Chasing the Runner's High" is only $12.99 for the trade paperback or you can name your own price for the eBook!
A portion of the proceeds from sales of Chasing the Runner's High will be donated to charity. If you order the book from his site www.chasingtherunnershigh.com, you can direct how that money is distributed. That's the best way to buy, but you can also order it from bookstores, and also Amazon via the club's website.

Cycle/Run/Walk Across America
Berkeley Lab has designed a transcontinental virtual trip across the United States. Each time you enter your mileage of either running, walking or cycling, they add it to your total and show you exactly what you would see if you had been traveling on the TransAmerica Trail from Yorktown, Virginia to Florence, Oregon. They also provide maps that show your progress and the progress of your friends if they have an account. If you wish, you can form teams to race across the United States. You can check it out at http://exercise.lbl.gov/index.html.

Looking for a female runner for the Bourbon Chase Relay
From the club email:
An out of town all female team is doing the Bourbon Chase Relay (www.bourbonchase.com) near Lexinton, KY on October 22-23. They are an all female team(visit www.girlsheartrockets.com for more info) in desperate need of a 12th runner for the race.
They are looking for a runner who is over the age of 21 due to the theme of the race. Most of them can run a marathon in 3:05-3:35, half in under 1:45, and 5K in under 21 mins. It would be cool to find someone within those time frames, but they're not at all strict about it. (Their starting time was based on the 10K time of the runner they lost, so they would prefer finding someone who can run under-8 minute/mi on a flat course for 7 miles and who has the endurance to run 3 times in 24 hours -- the mileage would total about 16mi). Despite this discussion of pace, they are a for-fun team that is completely relaxed about the event and promise anyone who joins them that they will have a great time!
If you are interested, contact Serena Ely at seley2@illinois.edu.

2010 RCGC Cross Country Series Race #3 Recap
Race #3 in the 2010 RCGC Cross Country Series was this past Thursday at Loveland High School and about 50-60 runners showed up to run in humid and sticky conditions with the threat of rain and thunder around the course. I was surprised that Stacy did not give his pre-start motivational pep talk about lightning and thunder which is "Do not worry about the lightning, it will motivate you to run faster!" Top male was Brady Holmer who ran a 17:40 in the sticky conditions. Brady runs for Lakota West and decided to use the race this week to help him get ready for the upcoming cross country season. A couple of his teammates also showed up and did quite well. The top female was not good enough to make the board for the top 5 finish in the overall women's times and Stacy is just getting too old to wait for people to finish especially with the threat of lightning and thunder.

Backpack Trail Race at East Fork Lake State Park-Recap
The Backpack Trail Race is Cincinnati's Oldest Trail Race and part of the Dirt Days Trail Series put on by Bob Roncker's Running Spot. It is also unique race in that it attempts to have all the runners finish at the same time as each runner is handicapped based on age, sex(male or female), and performance in other races from the Dirt Trail Series. The slower that you are, the earlier you start and the faster that you are the later that you start. Typically they alter the course from year to year as you run one direction one year and the opposite direction the following year. In 2010, they decided to add an 11.7 mile trail run(just do the loop one more time) without the handicap start in addition to the 5.4 mile race that still featured the handicap. About 75 people participated in the 5.4 mile and 70 did the 11.7 mile trail run. The uphill start killed me along with the heat, humidity, and of course more hills. Fortunately, I did not fall and they gave me a better handicap than last year. The postrace food was once again done by the Unwritten Chef. The setup for 2010 was a little different as race organizers were unable to get the shelter at East Fork for 2010 so they had registration, post race, and awards closer to the start. For about 15 minutes, I wondered where the postrace food was as I could see the drink. I noticed bags in the blue bins and grabbed one. The food was in there and it had a 3 cheese turnover and fruit salad with zucchini which was quite good. To see complete results or net times, go to www.runningtime.net.

2010 RCGC Cross Country Series Race #2 Recap
Race #2 in the 2010 RCGC Cross Country Series kicked off at Loveland High School this past Thursday and meet manger Mike Smith was back from Uganda. About 30-40 runners showed up to run what Stacy calls the "Tortures of the Damned". Unlike last week, I made the start despite the heavy traffic. Conditions tonight were hot and humid which may have kept some runners away and really hurt how I ran tonight. I was wondering if the top male was going to lap me which thankfully he did not. Top male was David Bea who ran a 17:14 which was 10 seconds off his personal best on the Loveland Course. The top female was Anika Busby who ran a 19:56 which was good enough for the top 5 finish in the overall women's times. Anika is a mother of two and ran in college.

2010 RCGC Cross Country Series Race #1 Recap
The 2010 RCGC Cross Country Series kicked off at Loveland High School this past Thursday. About 50-60 runners raced in humid conditions and lightning was around the course so Stacy started the race a few minutes early before the rain came and I missed the start due to that and an accident on I-71 near the Norwood Lateral which made me arrive about 7:15. I arrived just as the top male finished and he ran about 17:25 based on the big clock. Stacy did not use the timers as to minimize his chance of becoming a lightning rod. I did not get his name. I did get the top female who was Sara Mazzei and she ran a 20:56.

The Runners' Club of Greater Cincinnati Presents the Weight Watchers® Walk-It Day 5K Recap
The Weight Watchers® Walk-It Challenge is held every first Sunday in June to get their members moving through walking. In 2010, they teamed up with the Road Runners’ Club of America(RRCA) in an effort to get more of its members moving by walking. The RRCA asked its member clubs this past Spring to see if they could do this event. Despite the Memorial Day Race 6 days before, the Runners’ Club of Greater Cincinati took up the challenge to host a Weight Watchers® Walk-It Challenge in Cincinnati, one of 16 cities to do so.

About 130 walkers came out to participate for the walk held at Armleder Park, same site as the club holds the Memorial Day Race. About 110 signed up early but it rained heavily earlier that morning which dampened Walk Day turnout. Also volunteers had to dry off Picnic Tables in the shelter before registration opened which delayed the opening of registration and the start of the walk. When the walk started, the rain had gone away and walkers enjoyed a flat scenic walk of 3.1 miles. After participants finished the walk, they had some healthy refreshments which included granola bars, bananas, strawberries and string cheese.

Overall, the walk was a success. The complaints that I heard were the late start of the walk due to the rain, some walkers not getting the shirt size of their choice so the club pacified them by offering them the club technical shirt in their right size. Thank you to our sponsors Bob Ronckers Running Spot for providing Bob Bucks, and Waltz Business Solutions for last minute printing of the fliers. A big thank you goes to our volunteers Tom Glasscock, Liz Hofacre, Sara Macintosh, Patti Prince, Ken Schaible, Lynn Warner, Carly Schaible , Mike Donawerth, Laura Wagner, and especially Pamela Schaible. Pamela is a local leader for a local Weight Watchers® group. Her assistance and her promotion to the local Weight Watchers® groups contributed greatly to the success of the Walk. Photos

2010 National Running Day Recap
The Runners' Club of Greater Cincinnati joined with the UC Running Club to celebrate National Running Day in Cincinnati. National Running Day was an opportunity to promote running as a healthy safe form of exercise. About 30 people showed up at the Oval for the run as both groups met at the Oval at Mount Airy Forest. Runners could do either the trail or run the open road as there were courses for both. Everybody opted to do the trail. A few people took wrong turns on the trail but everybody got back to the shelter before the rains came. The UC Running Club had a grill out to celebrate the end of the school year and the RCGC brought water, pop and fruit. The trails were in pretty good condition and most of the runners found the steps this year.

Run for Haiti 5k Recap
I was unable to get myself out of bed for the Mount Airy Trail Run and I run Lunken at least once a year for a race so I decided to do the Help Haiti 5k as there are not many races on the West Side of Cincinnati. But with over 150 races in the Greater Cincinnati area, that is slowly changing. The race was this past Sunday afternoon at Oak Hills High School. It was put on by the Oak Hills High School French Club to raise funds for the relief effort in Haiti. The race had over 300 runners /walkers. Race conditions in terms of weather was great especially for a race going off at 3:00 PM as there was a light rain during the race rather than blazing heat and humidity. The course started from the Oak Hills High School went out towards Lawrence Road and came back to the high school. It extensively featured the subdivision of Cairnhaven. I was exepcting it to be hilly as I have run Lawrence from time to time but I did not expect the numbers of twists and turnarounds on the course which made the course one of the more difficult that I have run. I ran about 27 minutes but I did better than what I have been running lately. Also, I edged out Bill Hemmer who came to town to help support the race plus a few other charitable causes in Greater Cincinnati. Post race had bagels, bananas and water. I did not stay long for the postrace or awards as I had to be somplace by 5:00 PM.

New Poll Question is out
The new poll question for May is out! We want to know: What kind of shirt would you like from a race? Answer now!
St. Joseph Home Incline to the Finish Line 5K Race Survey
St. Joseph Home Incline to the Finish Line 5K was held a few weeks ago, on Sunday, April 25 and they had a good turnout of about 155 runners and walkers, despite the threat of rain.
In order to make their 5K better, St. Joseph Home is conducting a survey. They e-mailed the survey to those who participated in the race, but they really would love to hear from the running community regardless of whether they participated this year, or not.
If you have any questions, please feel free to e-mail Renee Russell of Saint Joseph Home with any questions or concerns. St. Joseph Home 5K Survey

UCLA Running Survey
Carmen Ng is a grad student at the UCLA Anderson School of Management. For her master's thesis project, she is studying what matters to runners when they look for a new pair of shoes, and she could use your help.
To help her out, complete a brief, 5-minute survey which asks about your running shoe habits. She and her 5 teammates are offering a $300 gift certificate to one person who completes this survey, and your insights would be incredibly helpful to them in completing their thesis.
They are doing this as an academic project, and you do not need to enter any personally-identifiable information(PII). Here's the link to the survey:

Red Brick Run Recap
This race is about 30 years old and is held on the beautiful Miami of Ohio Campus in Oxford Ohio. Although it is an hour away from Cincinnati, it still has the feel of a long drive for a 5K race. The first time that I ran this race was in 1996 and for some reason, I run this race in every even year (1996, 1998, 2000, 2002, etc). I continued the trend in 2010. Originally the race was held at 1:30 PM but recently they changed the time to 10:30 AM due to the recent warm April weather. The warmer weather caused the local college male and female spectators to tan themselves on the lawns along the course forcing much leering by passing male and female runners. Leering during a race does not lead to fast race times so they moved it to 10:30 AM.

Since they moved it to 10:30 AM, I have a tendency to be late for the start(remember the hour drive from Cincinnati and it seems like they keep adding more things on US 27 slowing down my drive time even more. I got there just as they were closing registration. They let me fill out a form and off I went. Conditions were sunny but cool.

The course has not changed in the years that I have run it. It features an uphill start by Millett Hall (which I missed some of since I was running late so I went out the sidewalk on Millet to catch up with the other runners). It runs around the Miami of Ohio Campus and you have a downhill finish in front of Millett Hall. I ran it in about 28 minutes but I have to check the results to be sure. Post race ceremony was basic but nice as you had nutrition bars, bananas, water, and sports drink which I believe were courtesy of the local Kroger's. The awards at this race are unique in that you get a red brick for being one the top runners or tops in your age group. Obviously, the bricks would make a great paperweight.

Overall a nice little run with the feel of going to an out of town race. I will probably be back in 2012.
