Cincinnati Hamilton County Public Library (CHPL) Preserving Cincinnati Running / Walking History

Received in an Email from Bob Roncker:

The CHPL, under the direction of Clarity Amrein, is actively working to preserve our local running/walking history.  You may ask, “How is this being done?”  Here are three projects that they have completed or are in the process of doing.

1. Do you recall the The Runner’s Spotlite?  This was a newspaper that the Running Spot store periodically published throughout the year. In it were race flyers, news, tips, rankings and race schedules. It was published for over 30 years and collectively represents a partial history of the local running/walking scene during that era.  The CPHL took on and completed the massive task of digitizing each issue.

2. The CHPL also wishes to preserve our local lore by accumulating a series of oral history interviews.  They started this in the CHPL Story Center last summer.  The first three videos, hopefully many more are to come, can be seen on the CHPL YouTube playlist:

Are YOU interested in recording an oral history interview on camera about your running experiences in the Greater Cincinnati area? These narratives can be about, but are not limited to, high school and/or college athletics or run clubs.  Call the CHPL at 513–369–6945 to set up an appointment in the Story Center.

3. You are welcome to attend an evening of stories about Greater Cincinnati's running/walking history:
When - Wednesday, September 23 from 6:00-8:00 p.m.
Where - Downtown Public Library in the Story Center (located on the second floor of the south building)
Presenters - Doug Olberding - Flying Pig President and CEO
Bob Roncker - Longtime running historian, enthusiast and organizer

No registration is required.  We hope to see many of you on the 23rd.  You will not be disappointed.
