Mile 22 of the Flying Pig now the Crest Smile Mile

Late last week, I read an article in the Cincinnati Enquirer that Flying Pig Marathon Mile 22 is now the Crest Smile Mile. This morning, I did some poking on the web and the Flying Pig website to confirm. Our fluid station is located at the smile mile and with just five days left, I have about 5 slots open to volunteer. If you would like to volunteer, you can only do so online in the next two days. Just do the following:
  1. Go to the Flying Pig Website Volunteer Page
  2. Click Sign-up with registered group
  3. Find the Runners' Club of Greater Cincinnati on the Pulldown Menu and type the password PCC (all capital letters).
  4. Fill out the information
Who knows, maybe P& G will give the volunteers(i.e us) free samples of Crest Toothpaste and other goodies.

Doughnuts Join List of Healthy Foods

According to this article from the UK, Doughnuts can be on the list of healthy foods and it brings back to mind a great SNL commercial parody.
Survey for First Time Marathoners
Have you completed your first marathon within the past year? If yes, tell me about your experience!
Elizabeth Loughren is an Exercise and Sport Psychology Ph.D. student at Temple University, in Philadelphia, and also a marathon runner. For her dissertation, she is looking at first time marathon runners (newbies), their motivations for completing a marathon, and their intent to run another marathon. If you have completed your first marathon within the past year, she would love to hear about your marathon experience! Listed below is the link for the online survey. The survey will take about 10-15 minutes to complete.
First-Time Marathon Survey

If you know of any other first time marathon runners, who ran their debut marathon within the past year, please pass along the survey information.

Are Running Shoes a Waste of Money?
Interesting article about running shoes that I came across this morning. Read and let me know what you think. I may have to rethink buying those $120 running shoes.

Local Runner Raising Money for Uganda
Last December, current RCGC member and past club President Mike Smith had the opportunity to travel to Uganda to volunteer in a couple of orphanages near Jinja, on Lake Victoria. He plans to return to Jinja in June to again volunteer in the same orphanages. He is raising
money to assist them in the work they are doing, as well as give a couple of the
family members, who he stayed with, to visit the United States. As part of his
fundraising, he is participating in a 50-mile trail run the week after the Flying
Pig. If you would like to support him in his effort, you can make checks out to
“Hope for Uganda” and send donations to:

Hope for Uganda
1802 Williams Avenue
Norwood, Ohio 45212

Thank you for your support and best of luck with your continued training for the
Flying Pig.

New Poll is Out
The new poll is out! This Saturday, April 25 is the Saint Joseph Home 5k which is one of the hardest 5k courses that I have run so this poll focuses on what local race has the toughest 5k course. Vote now! I limited it to current since the only past course that I still have nightmares about is the Spaghetti Knob 5k(circa 1998) and I never ran the Memorial Day Race Course at Mount Storm Park(legend has it that the course was redesigned in 1993 since the prior one was too hilly). If I missed a local race with a difficult course, please add it to the comments section. Also, if there were past races that had difficult course, also add those .
Flying Pig Marathon Volunteer Update

If you plan to help out at the Marathon and definitely would like T-shirt, you have until this Friday April 24 to sign-up(After all they have to sort and get together about 2,000 T-shirts for the various charities, groups and individuals). If you wear a small, sign up now to guarantee yourself a T-shirt. The Runners' Club of Greater Cincinnati has a waterstop at mile 22 and we still can use people to help out. Mile 22 is where the marathon really begins for the marathoners and your support and encouragement means plenty to them. If you are running the marathon, please encourage your friends and family to help out. If you're not running, join us for a little fun and help us help the runners at mile 22. To volunteer at our waterstop:
  1. Go to the Flying Pig Website Volunteer Page
  2. Click the Sign-up with registered group
  3. Select the Runners' Club of Greater Cincinnati, use the password PCC (case sensitive).
  4. Fill out the information
If you have any questions or problems, let us know.
