Cycle/Run/Walk Across America
Berkeley Lab has designed a transcontinental virtual trip across the United States. Each time you enter your mileage of either running, walking or cycling, they add it to your total and show you exactly what you would see if you had been traveling on the TransAmerica Trail from Yorktown, Virginia to Florence, Oregon. They also provide maps that show your progress and the progress of your friends if they have an account. If you wish, you can form teams to race across the United States. You can check it out at http://exercise.lbl.gov/index.html.
December Poll Results
Here are the final results from the December poll. The question was: What Holiday Race Are You Doing? The Jingle Bell Run with 6 votes narrowly beat out the Egg Nog Jog which had 5 votes. Help the RRCA Win a $10,000 Grant from Toyota
Received this in an email from the RRCA. The RRCA helps the Runners' Club of Greater Cincinnati with many of the events that we put on. If you can help the RRCA, thank you.
Here's the email:
Every week throughout the NFL season, four organizations are featured on Toyota's Facebook page and fans have the opportunity to vote daily to select the organization they believe is most deserving of the award. The Road Runners Club of America has been selected to be one of the four organizations this week!
The weekly winner receives a $10,000 grant from Toyota and is profiled during the following week's halftime show during NBC's "Sunday Night Football" telecast.
Your daily vote for RRCA for the next seven days could help our organization win $10,000 and a national commercial spot where the RRCA will share the "Join a Running Club" message with a large audience.
The RRCA is the first distance running organization to be highlighted as a Toyota HalfTime Handoff organization. Your participation in the voting effort helps support the sport you love the most!
If the RRCA wins, we will invest the $10,000 in the annual program fund, which supports our programs, such as Kids Run the Nation, Roads Scholars, Runner Friendly Community, National Running Awards, 2,000 Hour Volunteer Recognition, and much more.
VOTE NOW!

Blogs To Check Out
Recently, a couple of running blogs come to my attention. A runner in Indiana recently started a race reports website/blog. She invites you to come check it out and submit your race stories after your next big event, like Chicago!
She also has a complimentary Cincinnati Half Marathon race entry to give away. Details are on her blog at www.myracemystory.com.
Also, someone has started a blog with different trails in the greater Cincinnati area, so far only one route is mapped out (French Park) but he plans on mapping out various routes around the city with photos and descriptions of the trail. If this is helpful or you would like to contribute, let him know at http://cincytrailrunning.blogspot.com.
Finally, don;t forget to check out the Runners' High blog over at the Cincinnati Enquirer with veteran runner Jim Pleshinger and of course the Runners' Club of Greater Cincinnati blog.

After a 14 year layoff, the Hudy 14k came back in 2011.  The Hudy 14k was a race that the Clifton Track Club and the Runners' Club of Greater Cincinnati did in the late 80's up until the late 90's.  I did the race once in 1996 when it was held at the Schoenling Brewery at the corner of Liberty and Central Parkway which is now the Sam Adams Brewery.  Chad Sims, founder of the Hyde Park Blast, decided to revive the race and brought it back in 2011. In 2011, the race started and finished on Moore Street near the Christian Moerlein Event Center which was the old Husmans potato chip plant. Husmans also sponsored the original 14k for a couple of years. The race had about 2000 runners total. I am injured and could not train for the race so I did not run. Instead I volunteered to help at this race and I was a course marshal to make sure runners did not get lost.
It took awhile to get all the course marshals and fluid station personnel situated on the course so the race start was delayed for about 15 minutes. As they took us out, they took us along a significant portion of the course.  The course was confusing in some parts. The signs marking the breweries were a nice touch.  I looked for the Foss Schneider sign which was on Dalton Avenue. I do not believe that was the actual location but close enough..  Eventually, I get to my spot with two other people and it was confusing what to tell the runners where to go due to an issue with marking the course.  Because of how the cones were set up, it was hard to tell where the runners should go.  The group leader  did tell us what to do but it went in one ear and out the other.  After trying to figure out the course map, it just came down to one basic premise - where the lead vehicle goes, the runners go(Let's hope the lead vehicle knows the course). After the lead vehicle showed the way, it was easy except for those poor souls who were running the 7k and missed the turnaround. I saw quite a few people from the Runners' Club of Greater Cincinnati running the 14k.    I  was surprised with the distance between the lead runners and the rest of the pack. After I finished with my volunteer duties, I walk the last 1-1.5 miles of the course to the finish.  I decided to avoid the Brighton Overpass and jumped over to Central Parkway. I picked up the course by at Mohawk and McMicken, caught up to the last participant and walked in. For volunteering, you get two free beer tickets, free doughnuts when you sign up and free food. However, the lines were too long await for beer food etc and I had to be somewhere by noon.  The area was quite crowded so they may need to expand for 2012. Hopefully, they will do it next year, fix the issues with the 7k and I will be healthy enough to run the 14k.    Race Results.

Who Dey 5k Recap

The Who Dey 5k Race is put on by the Flying Pig Marathon for the Marvin Lewis Community Fund. In 2010 I was a spectator as I was injured and could not run. In 2011, I volunteered to help at this race and helped with volunteer check-in. At the last minute, I decided to walk the race even though I am still coming off an injury.
In 2010, the race was in November. For 2011, they moved it to September to coincide with the kickoff of the 2011 NFL season and to avoid the cold weather in November. The race was at Longworth Hall which is one the longest buildings in the world as it is about 1/4 mile long. They had about 800 runners and walkers for the race. The course was pretty flat except for the short climb up the Clay Wade Bailey Bridge.
Post race was pretty good but they ran out of chicken wings before I could finish. I had Glier's goetta, pizza, 1 beer and copious amounts of water. Also, they had the game on a giant television screen. Race Results.

Brian Rohne Memorial Run/ Walk Recap
About 175 runners and walkers flocked to Northern Kentucky University for the 17th Annual Brian Rohne Memorial Run / Walk(View Photos). It was raining in several areas around the Greater Cincinnati area except for Highlands Heights KY. However that almost did not stop the timers and finish line personnel from getting wet as the lawn sprinklers by the finish came on about 5 minutes after the race started. The overcast skies allowed some fast times to be run as the first 35 finishers were under 17:40. Congratulations to overall men's winner Adam Gloyeske and overall women's winner Kayla Justice. Adam ran a time of 15:53 and Kayla ran a time of 19:36. Congratulations to both. Go to www.cincinnatirunning.com for a complete list of results.
The Brian Rohne Memorial 5K is held each year in honor of former NKU cross country runner Brian Rohne, who was killed by an automobile in January of 1993 while on a training run on the AA Highway in Cold Spring, Ky. Contact Gina Meyers at meyersgm@yahoo.com to let her know that you can help.

2011 RCGC Cross Country Series Final Race Recap
The last race of the 2011 RCGC Cross Country Series was at the scenic Valley View Nature Preserve by Pattison Elementary in Milford this past Thursday. It was also Stacy's last race as race director. Stacy has directed the series for 25 years. Stacy has been involved with the series since 1973 first as a runner and then he took over as race director from Series Founder Don Wahle, the man who kept long distance running alive in Cincinnati during the 1950's and 1960's, in 1987. Before the race, he went through some of his most famous quotes such as "There are two waterstops on the course - one at the start and one at the finish", and" 5 minutes until the "Tortures of the Damned". For his final race as race director, he also guaranteed runners triple their money back if they did not like the services that he provided.
About 60 runners showed up to race in extremely hot conditions. This week's top runner was David Bea who ran a 16:57. The top female runner was Erin Bauer who ran a 19:36. Erin runs for Malone College and will be a senior this year. Runners who completed the entire 5k distance received either a mug or a wristband. Since it was the last series, there was a post race of bread, water, peanuts and granola bars.
Thank you to the Valley View Foundation for allowing use of Valley View Nature Preserve for the 2011 Summer Cross Country Series. Thank you to Dave Ackermann, Mike Smith, Slate Kirk for helping with the 2011 series. A special thank goes to Stacy Osborne for directing the series and keeping it going for 25 years.

He has directed the Series for 25 years. Over those 25 years, he said many memorable things during his race instructions and race announcements.

  • There will be two water stops on the course: one at the start and one at the finish.
  • First rule of cross country is know the course.
  • There's a thousand roots out there and one of them has your name on it.
  • Pay your fee take your chances.

2011 RCGC Cross Country Series Race #7 Recap
The 2011 RCGC Cross Country Series was at the scenic Valley View Nature Preserve by Pattison Elementary in Milford this past Thursday with race #7 of 8. About 30 runners showed up to race in extremely hot and humid conditions which definitely lessened turnout. The good news is that the heat and humidity turned the race into a "Tortures of the Damned" that Stacy says it is. I worked the finish and we talked about past High School Cross Country runners in Ohio and where are they now. This week's top runner was David Bea who ran a 17:10. We had only one female runner under 23:00 but she forgot to turn in her card.
There is only one races left in the series so join us next Thursday same time, same place. Also, it will be Stacy's last race as race director of the series for 25 years.

2011 RCGC Cross Country Series Race #6 Recap
The 2011 RCGC Cross Country Series was at the scenic Valley View Nature Preserve by Pattison Elementary in Milford this past Thursday with race #6 of 8. About 50 runners showed up to race to get ready for the Fall Cross Country Season. The good news was that it was not as humid as the past couple of days. I worked the finish and we talked about how to improve the Running Club, get more people to show up for the series and then got off into a tangent on politics(The finish line discussions are the best reason to volunteer). This week's top runner was David Bea who obliterated the course record with a 16:41. In an effort to green up the race, no female was under 23:00 so we did not give a card to the top female runner.
There are only two races left in the series so join us next Thursday same time, same place.

Injury Prevention Symposium at Cincinnati Children's Hospital
Cincinnati Children's Hospital and Bob Roncker's Running Spot is proud to present 1st Annual Runner's Symposium. The 1/2 day symposium's theme is "Performance Improvement through Injury Prevention." They will have a panel of experts discussing common running injuries, proper training, sports hydration, shoe ware and many other topics. The cost of the symposium is a real bargain: $15 for adults and $10 for student-athletes/children. While their stated target audience are high school and middle school runners, their coaches, and student-athletes, etc., they want to extend an invitation to any runner of any ability level because the content is applicable to all runners. The date of the symposium is Saturday, August 13, 2011 from 7:30 am to 12:30 pm at the Medical Education Resource Center located on the Oak Campus of Cincinnati Children's Hospital. For more information, view the flier.

2011 RCGC Cross Country Series Race #3 Recap
The 2011 RCGC Cross Country Series was at the scenic Valley View Nature Preserve by Patttison Elementary in Milford this past Thursday with race #3 of 8. About 35 runners showed up to race in almost perfect conditions. It was a little cloudy with a threat of rain but it (the rain) missed us. The temperature was ideal for a Thursday night run. The course was softer with a couple of wet spots on the course. However, that did not deter Mischa McCormick from blowing away the field with a new course record of 17:55. He was followed by his Dad Greg McCormick who ran a 19:39. Top female was Kellie Johnson who ran a 21:56.
Join us next Thursday at Valley View Nature Preserve for Race #4 of 8. And remember there are two waterstops on the course - one at the start and one at the finish.
