Cincinnati Hamilton County Public Library (CHPL) Preserving Cincinnati Running / Walking History

Received in an Email from Bob Roncker:

The CHPL, under the direction of Clarity Amrein, is actively working to preserve our local running/walking history.  You may ask, “How is this being done?”  Here are three projects that they have completed or are in the process of doing.

1. Do you recall the The Runner’s Spotlite?  This was a newspaper that the Running Spot store periodically published throughout the year. In it were race flyers, news, tips, rankings and race schedules. It was published for over 30 years and collectively represents a partial history of the local running/walking scene during that era.  The CPHL took on and completed the massive task of digitizing each issue.

2. The CHPL also wishes to preserve our local lore by accumulating a series of oral history interviews.  They started this in the CHPL Story Center last summer.  The first three videos, hopefully many more are to come, can be seen on the CHPL YouTube playlist:

Are YOU interested in recording an oral history interview on camera about your running experiences in the Greater Cincinnati area? These narratives can be about, but are not limited to, high school and/or college athletics or run clubs.  Call the CHPL at 513–369–6945 to set up an appointment in the Story Center.

Sue Harder 5k - October 4, 2026

Sue Harder passed away suddenly at the age of 58 in January 2021. She was a beloved member of the Fleet Feet Running Club. She was a very active runner who ran three marathons and countless half marathons. Her latest half marathon was just a few months before her passing. She was supportive of all new runners and was a friend and cheerleader to all her fellow runners.

The 2026 Sue Harder Memorial 5K is to be the sixth annual memorial run for Sue. The run will commemorate Sue by welcoming new friends and old for a 5K in her hometown in Cincinnati as well as virtually across the country. Proceeds will be donated to Girls on the Run.
