Friendship City 5k Race Recap

The Friendship City 5k Run Walk was one of the few races this past weekend and raises funds for the City of Erlanger Step Forward program to make Erlanger a more walkable community and connecting people through physical activity. This was the 9th year for the race, but the first time that I ran it. I was deciding between this race and the Vevay River Run which is part of the Swiss Wine Festival at Vevay Indiana. Vevay was an hour drive and Erlanger Ky was about 15 minutes so I went with less driving and less stress.
The race started at the Erlanger Branch of the Kenton County Library. They had over 100 runners and walkers for the race. Race Day Registration was $15. If you wanted a shirt, it was an extra 5 dollars even on race day. Course went through the residential areas of Erlanger and was flat. They had one waterstop on the course and the miles were marked but no mile timers. Normally not a problem, but my watch broke Saturday so I had no watch to keep track of my time. Post race featured bagels from Panera, bananas, water and chocolate milk. The chocolate milk was a nice addition and a favorite postrace drink of most runners. It also featured door prizes during the awards ceremony. Overall, it was a nice casual relaxed race with a flat course. I do not know if I will do it next year as there are almost 150 other races in Greater Cincinnati to run. For race results, visit www.runningtime.net.

Great Lung Run Coming to Cincinnati this Week

On July 30, 2012, twenty‐four‐year‐old Kelcey Harrison started running over 3,500 miles across the USA to spread awareness and raise money to help beat the cancer that took her friend Jillian Costello’s life just weeks after their college graduations. The money she raises in this trek from New York City to San Francisco will go to the Bonnie J. Addario Lung Cancer Foundation, and its unstoppable young people’s movement – Jill’s Legacy for Lung Cancer research. She is running about 30 miles a day and her route takes her through the Greater Cincinnati / Northern Kentucky area.
Kelcey just reached Xenia Ohio today so in the next couple days, she should be arriving in the Cincinnati area this week. You can follow her progress on twitter. For more information about the Great Lung Run and how to donate, visit www.thegreatlungrun.com.

Cycle, Run, Walk Across America

Berkeley Lab has designed a transcontinental virtual trip across the United States. Each time you enter your mileage of either running, walking or cycling, they add it to your total and show you exactly what you would see if you had been traveling on the TransAmerica Trail from Yorktown, Virginia to Florence, Oregon. They also provide maps that show your progress and the progress of your friends if they have an account. If you wish, you can form teams to race across the United States. You can check it out at http://exercise.lbl.gov/index.html.

NKU Cross Country Series Race #3 Recap and Results

From NKU Head Cross Country Coach Steve Kruse:
The third and final installment of the NKU cross country series was held Tuesday evening with a 5000 meter championship format. A nice evening and a challenging 3.1 mile that offered hills, grass, gravel & dirt to make it interesting. With 63 finishers, this was the largest race to date. Congratulations to the new course record holders Jeffrey Griffiths a Bearcat from New Richmond, OH (16:48) and Olivia Connaughton of Cincinnati, OH (20:32) who made a perfect sweep of the summertime series by not only winning all three races this summer but also setting a course record every time out. Special thanks to the NKU Alumni who came out to support this event and help spread the word to many youngsters who are discovering the sport. Congratulations to all of our award winners and a huge Norse cheer for everyone that braved the elements this summer to test yourselves on our new Norse proving grounds: “Valhalla”.
We look forward to seeing everyone back for future events as we hope to grow the series to help feed the inner Cross Country animal that lurks in all of us, whether we know it or not! The next event is the Brian Rohne Memorial 5k race on Saturday evening August 11, 7:00pm. Registration ends soon so get the flier or register online. Please join us!
