Shirts for the Midsummer Night's Trail Run
The Midsummer Night's Trail Run averages about 50-60 runners over its 6 year existence. To be able to do the race every year, we typically offer a shirt every other year as we have several left over from the previous year. 2013 would be a year that we would not offer a shirt, but we decided to try something different. We are going to use Zazzle.com to provide shirts on-demand. If you are interested in a shirt, go to our store on Zazzle, and order it through their site. If you don't like the color or the style, you can change it. If you want to have it for the race on Thursday August 8, be sure to order it by Friday August 2. For more information visit cincinnatirunning.com or email the race director at rcgcmidsummertrailrun@gmail.com. Special Thank You to Amanda Booher for creating the 2013 logo.

Indian Run 5k Race Recap
The Indian Run 5k was this past weekend and part of the SIRC Circuit which is a series of races based on participation rather than how you finish. The Indian Run is the third race in the circuit and is run from Milan High School in Milan IN on which the movie Hoosiers was based. This was the second year for the race.
I needed a race to continue the tristate run of Ohio, Kentucky and
Indiana, and I wanted to visit Milan IN so I decided to kill two birds with one stone. Race registration was at Milan High School which is north of the town. Race Day registration was $15. For $5 more you could get a shirt. Even though, I am swimming in t-shirts, I decided to get one. It was Pittsburgh Steeler gold which a couple of my friends thought was hideous but they liked the design. The race had about 150 runners and walkers in rainy conditions where the rain varied between light and heavy. The course started on a country road outside the high school and seemed like a long hike to the start. It was a loop course that took you by cornfields, a cornfield that is now a golf course, a few houses, across railroad tracks and finished back at the high school. One of the challenges in doing a race in a small town is that
you need to be on the lookout for cars as traffic control is done by
volunteers. Whether cars will respect a volunteer for traffic control is
an adventure. It was not a problem. Post race was bottled water, and bananas. Afterward, I ate at a local restaurant with good banana walnut pancakes and a small order of biscuits and gravy that was also quite good. I drove through the town of Milan on the way back home. I may do this race again next year and maybe all the SIRC races for the chance to win money. Race Results

by Lamuel Bean who ran a 20:58.

Running on the River 5k and 10k Race Recap
The Running on the River 5k and 10k is part of the Augusta Riverfest Regatta which was this past weekend and raises funds for the Saint Augustine School in Augusta. This was the second year for the race. After having a decent time at last year's race, needing a race to continue the tristate run of Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana, I decided to do this one again and also check out the Regatta.
Like last year, race registration was at the Augusta Riverview Park which is on the east side of Augusta. Race Day registration was $20 which included a shirt. They had about 60 runners and walkers for the race in sunny and warm conditions. The race had a 5k or 10k option. Since I had run little, I chose the 5k option which was flat unlike the 10k which includes a 1 mile climb up a steep hill. The 5k course changed from last year in that the 5k no longer went on Riverside Drive, one of the more scenic parts of the course and was a bit of a downer for most runners. One of the challenges in doing a race in a small town is that you need to be on the lookout for cars as traffic control is done by volunteers. Whether cars will respect a volunteer for traffic control is an adventure. It was not a problem. Post race was bottled water, gatorade and I did not see any food. Afterward, I checked out the Riverfest Regatta and the town of Augusta. I do not know if I will be back next year as there a few other races on the same weekend that I would like to try.
RCGC Summer Cross Country Series Race #2 Recap
The 2013 RCGC Summer Cross Country Series held its second race at Summit View Park in Blue Ash this past Thursday July 18. About 60 runners showed up to race in weather that was as hot as the hinges of hell, with temperatures over 90 degrees and the heat index near a 100 making the race a real Tortures of the Damned. Despite the heat, the course was still muddy in two parts and Blue Ash was doing work on some parts of the course so Stacy made a course change about 60 minutes before the race. JJ Weber was the top male finisher with a time of 18:00 followed by last week's winner David Bea who ran a 19:47.
Join us next Thursday at Summit View Park in Blue Ash for the third race in the RCGC Summer Cross Country Series.

Sayler Park Run Race Recap
The Sayler Park Run is in its 18th year and goes through the tree lined streets of Sayler Park on the West Side of Cincinnati. For a long time, it was the only race on the West Side of Cincinnati and usually averaged about 200-300 runners.I first ran this race in 2002 or 2003. I last ran it maybe in 2008. The race benefits the Programs at the Sayler Park Recreation Center and is hosted by the center which means real restrooms rather than the portolets that you see at most races.
I was coming off an injury and my sister talked me into the doing the race due to the Race Day Registration Price of $10. If you wanted a shirt, you could get a cotton one for $10 but I opted out of the shirt since I have so many of them. Conditions were sunny but cool with temperatures maybe in the 70's for the 300 runners and walkers who decided to run this morning.
The course seemed the same from the last time that I ran it. You start in front of the Sayler Park School on Home City Avenue next to the Recreation Center and finish in front of the school. I do not remember much about the course except for the fact that it was mostly flat with one uphill and one downhill. I remember points of interests like the start, the golf course, the statue of Tecumseh, and the finish but not the route which is unusual. I do remember the starter who would make Stacy Osborne proud. He started the race exactly at 9:00 whether you were at the start or not. I was not. I ran it in about 32 minutes but I have to check the results to be sure. Post race was nutrition bars, water, pop, hamburgers. I did not have time to stay for the awards as it seems like they take awhile to do the awards due to the fact that when you finish you get a finish card that you need to turn in. I did not have time to stay as I needed to be somewhere at noon.
Overall, I liked this race due to the price and they added to the post race experience from when I last ran it. The only negative is if you do not live on the West Side, it is an out of the way race to get to. Race Results were not posted at the City of Cincinnati website but I will check later this week.

RCGC Cross Country Series Race #1 Recap
The 2013 RCGC Summer Cross Country Series kicked off at Summit View Park in Blue Ash this past Thursday July 11. Stacy Osborne returned as series race director after a one year hiatus and his failed attempt at making it in a Beatles tribute band. About 80 runners showed up to race on the 3 loop 3.5 mile course in sunny conditions. Also on hand was Don Wahle who founded the series in 1968. Despite the sunny conditions, the week's worth of rain made the course muddy in some spots so runners were able to get three races in one(a cross country race, a trail run and a mud run) for the price of nothing. David Bea was the top male finisher with a new course record of 20:13 over 3.5 miles. In second place was Kevin Lawson who ran a 22:29 followed by Patrick Ton who ran a 22:46. The top female was Anna Stearns who ran a time of 25:06 followed by Kamaria Walton with a time of 25:23.
Join us next Thursday at Summit View Park in Blue Ash for the second race in the RCGC Summer Cross Country Series.
