In 2010, we brought back the Costume division (need to run the race in costume). See what we do in 2013! Turkey Burner Race Recap
After a last minute cancellation of this race in 2011 due to weather, the Club decided to try once again for the post-Thanksgiving Day - Turkey Burner 5 Mile Trail Run, held this past Saturday, November 24th at England/Idlewild Park in Burlington, KY. Twelve runners braved the wind and cold to come out and run this inaugural race and set the first course records. Top male finisher was Bill Valenzano with a time of 39:17, and top female finisher was 8th grader Olivia Connaughton with a time of 39:40. Olivia was also our top overall female finisher at our Midsummer Night 5 Mile Trail Run this past August! The course followed the bike paths throughout the park and included rolling hills, winding turns, and a few creek crossings. Though it was quite chilly for most of the race, the sun finally popped out just as the last racers were finishing. Awards included RCGC gear bags, RoadID gift certificates, and Graeter’s gift cards for top finishers. Photos and results are now up on our Facebook group page and website: www.cincinnatirunning.com. The Club hopes to make this an annual event for the local running community, as trail races in our area are becoming more and more popular every year!

Run Across Ohio with Connie Gardner
Received the following in an email:
2012 Ultrarunner of the Year and American record holder Connie Gardner is going to Run Across Ohio this month to raise money for The Patriot Runners. This will be her dry run for next summer when she attempts to set a world record by running across America in the fastest time yet. (Yes, there are records for this. Who knew?)
She will leave Cleveland (Browns Stadium) on Thursday morning November 29 at 5:30am and cover roughly 60 miles each day. She will arrive in Cincinnati (Paul Brown Stadium) on Sunday night. She anticipates stopping overnight in Ashland, Delaware and Cedarville as she travels down US42. She will be equipped with a tracking device so people will be able to see where she is and join in running with her. Follow her on Twitter as she makes her way across Ohio. For more information, contact the event organizer, Charles Elkins at 330-441-1096.

2012 Straight Street Climb Recap
The Straight Street Hill Climb is a .36 mile race up Straight Street in the CUF neighborhood. The race was started by the Clifton Track Club in 1976. In 2011, the race added a bike challenge in addition to the road race. This was the second time that I did this special form of torture. The last time was about 4 years ago when 20 of us decided to go up Straight Street. I decided to do it this year since the memory of that race had faded. Also, for the first time in a long time, I had that Sunday free. They had a little over 60 people who decided to run up the hill and quite a few cyclists which was more than they expected as they ran out of race entry forms. The race started a few minutes later than expected due to a long line at registration. Conditions were cold and clear which really affected my run. The most important rule about warming up is the shorter the race, the longer the warmup. I did not get enough of a warmup in and I paid for it later. I felt great at the start. If you feel great at the start of this race, it means that you are going too fast and will probably not run the entire hill. I did not and needed to walk about 15 seconds halfway up. I eventually made it across the finish line in about 4 minutes. Post race was pretty good with Wiedemann beer, bananas, bagels and cream cheese, water, and sports drink. I did not feel like eating so I just had a water. Also, I went looking for my lungs which I believe I lost somewhere around Luna. Results really took awhile to do. I left before results were announced as I needed to be somewhere by 11:00 AM. If I have the Sunday free next year, I might do it again.

Turkeyfoot Trot Race Recap
Turkeyfoot Trot is a race that raises funds for the St. Barbara Church Building Fund. The Building Fund helps with upkeep and new construction at St. Barabara Chruch. It is (surprise) held at St. Barbara Church on Turkeyfoot Road in Independence Kentucky.
2012 was the 5th year for the race. I decided to do this race since it was a short drive from home and for 2012 the smaller races have more appeal to me than the larger ones. They had about 200 runners and walkers for the race which was a record number. Race Day Registration was $25 which included a long sleeve t-shirt if you got there before they ran out. The race also had chip timing with the Ipico Chip placed on the shoe. The course was an out and back course on Turkeyfoot Road. The downhill going out and the nice tailwind made for an unusually fast first mile. I paid for my fast first mile coming back on the third mile which was uphill with a headwind. Conditions for the race were great with Sunny and almost 50. Post race was outstanding as they featured turkey sandwiches, pizza, cookies, various types of fruit and vegetables, small bags of potato chips and water. Results took sometime to do but I really had no place to go so I stayed for the awards. Awards were gift cards courtesy of the Tri-State Running Company and went to the top two males and top females in 5 year age groups. After the awards they had door prizes which included a free turkey to some lucky winner. I may do it again due to the nice postrace, somewhat challenging course and decent price for a 5k run with a shirt. Turkeyfoot Trot Results.

Run For Recovery 5k Recap
Run for Recovery 5K was a first year race that raises funds for the Grateful Life Foundation which assists active alcoholics and addicts and their families to achieve a
healthy lifestyle and become independent, productive, contributing
members of the community. It was held at Blessed Sacrament Church in Ft. Mitchell Kentucky. They had about 200 runners and walkers for the race. Race Day
Registration was $35 which included a long sleeve t-shirt. The race also had chip timing with the Ipico Chip on the shoe. I forgot to grab a stay so I had to tie it through my shoelaces. The course was a mostly out and back course that went through a residential area into the Highland Cemetery. The cemetery was quite hilly and led to slower than expected race times. Conditions for the race were cold but clear. They were definitely better than the last race that I did which featured a Superstorm and the race before which featured remnants of a Hurricane. Post race featured hot dogs, bananas, granola bars, and water.
Results took sometime to do due to the slower than expected times and I needed to be somewhere by 10:30 so I left before the awards were handed
out. I heard that they were gift cards courtesy of the Tri-State Running Company. Overall, it was a nice race with a few friends. I may do it again just to see if I can run a better time on a challenging course. Run For Recovery Results.

A Brave Halloween 5k Race Recap
A Brave Halloween 5k was a first year race that raises funds for the Talawanda High School Track and Field Team. It was held on a Tuesday Evening at Oxford Community Park in Oxford OH. I was in Oxford during the day so I decided to spend extra time in Oxford and do this race.
The race started near the football field at the Oxford Community Park. They had about 90 runners and walkers for the race. Race Day Registration was $20 and included a t-shirt if you got there early enough. The course went through a residential area across from the park and then on the paths of the Park. It was mostly flat with a few barely noticeable uphills and downhills. They had one waterstop and the miles were marked with timers. Conditions for the race were cold, windy with a light rain due to the remnants of Sandy. Post race featured Cheese Pizza and bread sticks from Larosa's, bananas, apples, water and chocolate chip cookies. The Pizza was nice on a cold and windy evening. Results did take awhile to do so I left before the awards were handed out as I dreaded the 1 hour drive from Oxford to Cincinnati at night in the cold rain. Overall, it was a nice fun race with a flat course and plenty of cheerful volunteers on a dreary night. I do not know if I will do it next year as I may not be in Oxford on the same day the race is held next year. Go to www.abravehalloween5k.com for race results and photos.

Sponsors Wanted For 2013 Valentine's 2 Mile Labor of Love
The Valentine's 2 Mile Labor of Love is one of the most fun and unusual
races you'll find in Cincinnati. Over the last couple of years, we made
it more unusual by adding a couple of new specialty categories like
Ball & Chain(a male and female runner are tethered together so
they run together), Blind Date(you randomly get a partner) and the
Costume division (need to run the race in costume) plus a few other new
ones. The race is put on by the Runners' Club of Greater Cincinnati and
proceeds go to support running in the Greater Cincinnati area and the
NKU Cross Country and Track team. Last year's race had about 300 runners
and this year we are looking at about 400 runners.
The 2013 race is looking for a few more sponsors. If you are interested in getting involved with one of Cincinnati's most unusual running events as a sponsor or want more information about other club events, contact us at cincinnatirunning@gmail.com.

2012 Hudy 14k Recap
After a 14 year layoff, the Hudy 14k came back in 2011. The Hudy 14k was a race that the Clifton Track Club and the Runners' Club of Greater Cincinnati did in the late 80's up until the late 90's. I did the race once in 1996 when it was held at the Schoenling Brewery at the corner of Liberty and Central Parkway which is now the Sam Adams Brewery. Chad Sims, founder of the Hyde Park Blast, revived the race and brought it back in 2011. In 2011, the race started and finished on Moore Street near the Christian Moerlein Event Center which was the old Husmans potato chip plant. Christian Moerlein is in the process of converting the Event center into a local brewery, so a new location was needed for 2012. For 2012, the event was moved from Moore Street to the brand new Smale Riverfront Park next to the Christian Moerlein Lager House. Surprisingly, the 14k Course changed very little except that you started and finished in a different location. The 7k was a whole new course but still an out and back and I heard that they did mark the turnaround this year.
I was coming off an injury and could not train for the race so I volunteered to help at this race through Give Back Cincinnati. I was a course marshal to make sure runners did not get lost and to make sure that cars did not hit the runners.
In 2012, they got the course marshals and fluid station personnel out on the course in ample time and the race was able to start on time. They split us into two separate buses as one bus covered the first part of the course and another covered the second part. Both left well before race start. The signs marking the breweries were back for 2012. I got to my spot which was near the last fluid station on the course up near McMicken and Walnut. One of the interesting things about Over-the-Rhine is how one street can fork into two or three separate streets at one intersection, a common occurence on McMicken as all roads seem to end at McMicken. At my spot, I set-up the cones for the turn as the street was pretty active until about 10 minutes before the first runner. Once the cones marked the course, I cheered the runners as they came and some simple traffic direction. I saw quite a few people from the Runners' Club of Greater Cincinnati running the 14k. I was surprised how long that they allowed the course to be open compared to 2011. After I finished with my volunteer duties, I walked with the other volunteers back to Smale Park via Vine Street. For volunteering, you get a free beer ticket, free doughnuts when you sign up and free food. However, the lines were too long to wait for beer food etc and I had to be somewhere by noon. It was a good experience to help with a race. Hopefully, in 2013, I will be healthy enough to run either the 14k or at least the 7k. Race Results.

31st Annual Queen City Invitational Recap
Brief recap of this past weekend's Queen City Invitational from NKU Cross Country Coach Steve Kruse.
The 31st Annual Queen City Invitational was at its original course in Mount Airy Forest this past Friday. Despite the previous weeks rains and the threat of severe thunderstorms in the area on the day of the race, it was a beautiful late summer evening to have a cross country meet. With competing teams very similar to recent years past, it is apparent that some smaller programs are catching up with some of the larger ones making a somewhat familiar field become a much more competitive one. 1st year DII team Cedarville had a convincing win in the overall men’s race making it the first year since 2000 that neither Xavier or Cincinnati won the men’s race. For the women, Xavier had no problem repeating as team champions this year, followed once again by the Bearcats. Comparatively the course ran slow for both men’s & women’s races based on previous races at Mt. Airy. Perhaps the most noteworthy item of the afternoon was the fans. There were so many people crammed in at Mount Airy to watch a Friday night meet that it was actually hard to get around the course if you were not actually racing. This created a very exciting atmosphere and I am thrilled that we had so many Norse supporters to cheer us on.

Mercy Metric Recap
The Mercy Metric is one of Greater Cincinnati's longest running races. 2012 was the 34th Running of the race which puts it behind the Thanksgiving Day Race, the Summer Cross Country Series, the Memorial Day Race and the Heart Mini Marathon in terms of running longevity. It is held on Labor Day at Lunken Playfield and features a 5k Run / Walk or 10k Run. The 5k starts 5 minutes earlier than the 10k.
I decided to do the 10k since both races were the same price and I wanted my money's worth of running. The T-shirt was an optional purchase for $5 more. Since I have plenty of shirts, I decided to pass on the shirt. Both races start near the parking lot by the tennis courts at Lunken. They had about 90 runners for the 5k and 45 runners for the 10k. Unfortunately, the remnants of Hurricane Issac wreaked havoc with the turnout and the course for both races at Lunken Playfield. There were large puddles of water in plenty of areas near the beginning and end of the race. The road into Lunken Playfield had a puddle forming into a lake. When the 10k started, the rain died down and after the first mile into the 10k race so did the puddles. Both courses run on the Lunken Playfield loop. The 5k is an out and back course on the Lunken bikepath loop along Wilmer Avenue while the 10k goes around the entire loop with one hill climb and one hill descent. Post race featured bananas, oranges, water and cake. Awards were medals and it seemed that almost everyone there got a medal. I have done this race a couple of times before and may do it next year when it turns 35th next year. Hopefully, the weather will be better. Mercy Metric Results.
